Parents
Parent Evenings and Open Days
The only people to have more contact with your child than us, is you.
We aim to provide a range of opportunities in order to keep you informed, to get your views and to share with you our goals for your child.
We hold two parent evenings per year, one in the Autumn term and one in the Spring term. Parents are provided with a progress report on targets, attitude and behaviour. A final school report is sent out in the Summer term. Parents evenings are currently being held virtually during the pandemic.
If you have any concerns during the year about your child's progress, please make an appointment to speak to the class teacher.
Assessment and Reports
When your child enters school in Reception, some time is spent conducting a 'baseline assessment' package. This helps us to know your child's needs and be more accurate in meeting them.
Regular tests are carried out and assessment activities occur throughout curriculum areas. Children at the end of year 2 and year 6 will participate in end of Key Stage assessment tasks and tests. For these children, their end of year report will contain the results of these tests.
All information about your child is shared with you and we are glad to talk with you about your child's progress at any time.
Damage to School Property
If a child causes damage to school property, it is the policy of the Governors to charge for a proportion of the damage incurred.
Homework
As a result of the parent questionnaire that was sent out last year, we have reviewed how we set homework in school. Parents requested that there was a change in the amount of homework we gave to children. We have been looking at a number of options to tackle this situation and have decided that we provide maths and English homework books for years 3, 4 and 5. Year 6 will be given seperate homework for their SATs. This is in addition to the reading, spellings and times tables that are sent home. The books will be sent home on a Friday and marked in class the following Friday.
Special Needs
The school is committed to providing a broad, balanced, relevant and differentiated curriculum so that all pupils may benefit according to their individual need.
A code of practice exists at St. Edward's where the children who show exceptional ability or have special learning difficulties are identified and supported.
This register is revised each term, progress is monitored, targets are set and review meetings are arranged with parents and outside agencies to agree on the work and approach to meet the needs of individual pupils.
If you have any concerns or queries about any aspect of your child's progress or development, please discuss these with your child's class teacher or Mrs Leak , Assistant Head (Inclusion).
Complaints and Comments
We recognise and value the partnership between home and school and work hard to make sure that misunderstandings or confusions are kept to a minimum.
Teachers deal with numerous enquiries each week from parents. Such informal queries are welcome and are not regarded as complaints.
If however, you feel the need to make a more formal comment or complaint, the procedure is: -
- Make an appointment to talk to the class teacher.
- If you are still concerned, make an appointment to see the class teacher with the Unit Leader/Deputy Head/Headteacher.
- Parents if still not satisfied, have the right to contact the Governing Body (through their parent representative or the Chair of Governors).
- Further information may be sought from Rochdale Education Authority.

Extra-Curricular Activities
The school offers extra-curricular activities to the children which may include: -
Gardening
Football for boys and girls
Youth Club
Games Club
Playground Pals
Knitting and Sewing
Study Support
Each morning the school runs a breakfast club. School also runs an out-of-school club from 3:30pm to 5:45pm.
Other clubs are also organised for shorter periods during the school year, such as Judo, Karate and Choir.
School Charges Policy
As part of our teaching at St. Edward's, educational visits are organised and visitors may be invited into school to work with the children.
Sadly, school cannot afford to subsidise these activities, so you will be asked to make a voluntary contribution towards the costs. Your contributions are vital to fund the trips, although no pupil will be excluded from a trip because of non-payment. However, sometimes if not enough contributions are forthcoming school may be unable to fund the activity and the event would have to be cancelled.
Children have the opportunity to have music lessons from the Peripatetic Music Service and there are some sporting activities provided by external agencies. These are 'optional extras' and therefore carry a charge.
