Assessment

Whilst this page is aimed at staff, the content may be appropriate for teachers from other schools or parents with an interest in assessment processes (both statutory and non-statutory).

EYFS Assessment (Reception)

Children in Reception are assessed against the Early Learning Goals (ELGs). These assessments are informed by observations undertaken by the teacher and teaching assistant (rather than a test).

For each aspect of the ELG's (17 in total) children are assessed as either

  • Exceeding (working above the ELG
  • Expected (working in line with the ELG)
  • Emerging (working below the ELG)

Phonics Screening Check (Year 1)

Year 1 children complete the Phonics Screening Check towards the end of the summer term. This involves the child working alongside their teacher to read a list of 40 words. The mark is reported to families at the end of the year (typically a mark of 32 indicates the threshold of the check has been met).
